Project Summary

DAE provided structural engineering for this 3,000-square-foot residence on an almost half-acre site. The home features a modern interpretation of a cathedral roof, which required a specialized structural approach to support its unique geometry.

Engineering Challenges

To maintain the architectural intent, DAE designed bent steel frames installed along the roof plane, providing the necessary stiffness without altering the visual expression of the roof. Finite element analysis was used to evaluate deflection and ensure the steel framing integrated seamlessly with the design.

Core Design Concepts

Finite Element Analysis

DAE utilized finite element analysis to evaluate roof deflection and refine the bent steel framing layout. This ensured the structure provided the necessary rigidity while remaining fully concealed within the design. The structural system was developed to uphold the roof’s shape and performance without requiring any modifications to the architect’s intended aesthetic.

Maintain Architectural Appearance

Ensuring that the steel did not influence or distort the architectural appearance demanded precise coordination and careful analysis.

Limit Steel Use

Integrated steel only where required within a primarily wood-framed structure.
