Project Summary

DAE provided civil, structural, and plumbing engineering for this approximately 4,500-square-foot residence situated atop a bluff overlooking the water. The home features an open floor plan with expansive glazing, requiring the integration of steel within the wood-framed structure to preserve the architectural vision.

Engineering Challenges

Because of the property’s location on a steep bluff, the foundation design required careful evaluation of geotechnical conditions to ensure long-term stability. Civil site design was also challenged by the tight lot constraints and proximity to the water.

To support the architectural intent, DAE designed steel moment frames and beams, along with structural detailing for the front porch swing and pool, which sits close to the bluff and required strategic column and deck support.

Core Design Concepts

Foundation Design

Because of the property’s location on a steep bluff, the foundation design required careful evaluation of geotechnical conditions to ensure long-term stability.

Groundwater

Civil site design was also challenged by the tight lot constraints and proximity to the water.

Maintain Design Elements & Functionality

The home’s open floor plan and large glazing areas demanded structural systems capable of spanning long distances while maintaining minimal visual impact. Integrating steel into the wood-framed structure was necessary to preserve the clean architectural lines and provide adequate lateral and gravity resistance.
