Project Summary

DAE provided structural and civil engineering for this 10,390-square-foot residence in East Hampton, designed with a series of narrow building sections and cantilevered volumes that contribute to its distinctive block-like architectural form. These elements introduced significant lateral design challenges and required a high degree of coordination with the architectural team.

Engineering Challenges

To achieve the desired cantilevered geometry, DAE integrated steel cantilever frames within the wood-framed superstructure and used select moment frames to provide lateral stability. Finite element analysis was employed to design the framing within the limited architectural space while maintaining structural performance.

DAE also provided septic design for the 2.2-acre property, ensuring compliance with local requirements while supporting the project’s demanding layout and site conditions.

Core Design Concepts

Steel Cantilevers

To achieve the desired cantilevered geometry, DAE integrated steel cantilever frames within the wood-framed superstructure and used select moment frames to provide lateral stability.

Finite Element Analysis

Finite element analysis was employed to design the framing within the limited architectural space while maintaining structural performance.

Coordination on Lateral Design
